Lego. The favourite toy of James May supposedly and the curse of all parents who walk barefoot in the middle of the night to the bathroom. It seems that there’s very little that Lego can’t mimic or improve (aside maybe from Xbox games like Lego Batman – truly stupendously dull!) In the old days, you just tipped an entire box of the stuff onto the floor and made something (anything) out of the bits. What didn’t exactly match up to precise verisimilitude was more than compensated for by childhood imagination.
Maybe it’s that modern kids lack the imaginative powers of their parents or maybe it’s more a case of there being so many more entertainment outlets for kids today.Whatever the reason, the latest Lego sets have been made to look exactly and only like something. The toys you can build are only what you see on the box lid, which kind of negates the point of Lego really! However if you are going to make a dedicated object from Lego, it may as well be useful.
Lego-based birthday gifts that are suitable for kids and adults alike come no better than the Lego Digital Camera. OK, that’s all it is or can ever be, but it’s a thing of practical beauty and the bonus is it can be built into all your other Lego constructions! With 3 megapixel detail and 4 x digital zoom, it’s a reasonably competent digital camera to boot. It’s got a 1.5 inch LCD screen too so you can have a look at what you’ve just shot and it will store up to 80 photos that you can transfer to your computer via USB, just like a proper digital camera.
If you don’t want to waste this on your kids, then as unusual gifts go it’s quirky yet nostalgic enough to be happily accepted by almost any age. Of course, the specification may not be the point of this trip down memory lane for many of us. Even though it is supremely functional, there’s nothing cooler than whipping out a Lego camera at the wedding reception or on holiday.Avoid asking passer’s by to take your group photo for you. They may accept your kind invitation, take one look and leg it with the Lego!
